This indeed is a great time for astronomy enthusiasts, as there are scores of celestial events lined in August. And for sky-watchers, from exploration of meteor showers to witnessing a total solar eclipse, they will surely enjoy an amazing show this month. Here is a quick rundown of all the astronomical events which you must not miss this in this month.
Perseid Meteor Shower has been running for quite some time now. But notably, you can watch hundreds of shooting stars on the eve of August 12 and the wee hours of August 13. For a more clear view, you must watch it away from a populated or big city, as even the pollution and moon light can obstruct the view.
Aldebaran is considered one of the brightest stars in the Zodiac Taurus constellation. Its current position is at a 65 light-years distance away from the Earth. This massive star will be seen near to the upper right of the moon on August 16.
The hottest astronomical event of the year is finally approaching. What makes this phenomenon even more interesting is that it is occurring after a long period of 99 years. The moon will entirely block the sun and the best place to witness this stunning view would be North America. Unfortunately, the Total Solar Eclipse will not be visible from India.
On this day, Jupiter, the biggest planet in the solar system will come at a closer distance from the moon. The celestial set of two can be sighted from 9 am in the morning to 9 pm in the night on August 25. For viewing this duo, you will be needing binoculars and you might be lucky to also spot Spica, the brightest star in the Virgo constellation.
Hope for clear skies this month and you might actually be lucky to experience rare astronomical sights.
